Many people don’t know but you can also sell your used items and make money Amazon, just like on Ebay.
You have to sign up with a seller account which is nothing else than fill out the application form and you are ready to go.
However you have to be very very careful what you are selling because Amazon fees are Astronomical. Literally, Astronomical. 36.5% in this case. Astronomical Amazon fees!!
So, I would not recommend you to sell anything of a small value with a thin profit margin like DVDs or Games or even books, you are buying on car boot sales (flea market in the USA) or on Ebay. You will be guaranteed to loose money if you do!!!
I just recently signed up as a seller with amazon.co.uk and my second sale was a PSP mini game. (I’ll tell you about the first sale in a minute). Here are the figures from selling the PSP mini game.
Item: Spider-Man 3 [UMD Mini for PSP] [UMD Mini for PSP] (2007) Tobey Maguire
Condition: Used – Very Good
Condition note: in very good condition, start playing
Listing ID: 1204GJ5F1MK
Order date: 11/02/2011
Buyer’s price: £2.95
Amazon fees: -£1.53
Your earnings: £2.68
As you see, the selling price was £2.95 plus Amazon allowed me to add a shipping cost of £1.26 and that totals to £4.21
Out of that, they took out 36.5% fee for themselves £1.53 and that left me with £2.68. The postage was £1.40 (I have the receit ) That left me with a grand total of £1.28 and My cost of the game was £1.00 pound. If I figure in the gas to go to the post office and I am in minus on a seemingly good deal.
Amazon allows you only a set amount for postage. You can’t change that!! Their fee also comes out of the postage cost, which has nothing to do with being part of the item. That’s a scam from amazon!!!!
Ok Here is my first sale.
This was a Small hand held video camera I’ve purchased for £20 on the car boot sale (called flea market in the USA). Here are the figures:
-Item: Sanyo Xacti HD2 High Definition Digital Movie Camera [Electronics]
Condition: Used – Very Good
Condition note: In very good overall condition, some markings from use on the body, the glass cover has a tiny scratch mark. Someone must have been cleaning it with a dirty rag. Does not effect picture quality. Takes beautiful videos. Come s with docking/charging station and charger only.
Listing ID: 0905GD8EH92
Order date: 29/12/2010
Buyer’s price: £135.00
Amazon fees: -£16.98
Your earnings: £123.02
As you can see the selling price here was higher and the amazon fees were lower. Why?
Because (and this is off of the Amazon website).
Individuals selling at Marketplace pay a GBP 0.86 per item completion fee, plus a closing fee of 17.25% of the sales price (11.5% for Electronics & Photo items) for each item sold.”
As you can see the –item completion fee– kills all your profit on a thin margin small value item. Selling DVDs, games, books etc. you probably won’t make any profit. Now if you just want to sell your stuff you have at home, it’s alright, because you probably just want to sell it and not profiting from it. You get what ever you get and you are satisfied.
Selling on Amazon for profit is a different ballgame. Also, when you sell on amazon it can take some time before the item is sold. On Ebay you set the number of days and the item pretty much will sell. In Amazon it might take months before the item sells, but no listing fee like on ebay and if it sits there for 6 months it won’t cost you anything.
