Credit card surcharge. I am almost sure these charges are illegal even though there might not be any regulations against them.
What is it? It’s an added fee to a product, or service, a company charge, if you pay by a credit or debit card. It is a Penalty for using a credit or debit card. It’s a masked price increase.
On the other hand the credit card issuing companies such as Visa and MasterCard, levy a fee for this service the merchants have to pay. Every merchant that offers to accept payment by credit card, have to pay a fee, -somewhere around 2.5%- for each credit card transaction they make.
So, looking at the surcharge from this point of view the companies are transferring this extra cost to the customer, saying “well, we have to pay this fee thus it comes out of our bottom line”.
Does that make it right? No! It’s still a scam because the merchant don’t have to offer credit card payment and if they chose to do so, they should pay the fee. It’s a marketing tool to attract customers and they are using it to make it easier for customers to purchase from them.
A tool! Just like paved parking or wider entrance doors, heating or cooling in the store. Those are marketing tools too, because the customer would not visit a store in the summer when there is a 100 degree heat inside or minus 50 degree cold, if they had to squeeze through the door sideways air sucked in, or park in the mud. Should they implement a heating or cooling, wider doors, or paved parking surcharge too?
