Virgin Media and Unwanted Pop ups

I live in the UK and recently had visitors from another country for 3 days. When they switched on their computers and was browsing the internet (using wireless) they started to get all the pop-ups we usually get here in the UK.

I always thought this was some sort of infestation on my computers although none of the virus programs I use (3) was able to find any.

I also asked friends living in other countries if they have pop ups but they don’t.

So It must be Virgin Media, who is the carrier of my internet service, spreading virus and unwanted popups to earn more money from. The trouble is I don’t get a share of that money and I never gave authorization to them for exploding pop up viruses onto my computer.

“If you dive deep into most cable modems the firmware and such is controlled by your cable co. So for it to catch a virus means that it would currently have to originate from your network provider. As of now, there is no other known way to “infect” a cable modem.”

Would this statement be true?

It sure sounds like it. Considering the unexpected pop ups on my friend’s computers too. Could the modem be infected? Do anyone have an answer or would know anything how these things works?

I just did a complete reformat and installation of my computer a few days ago and these pop ups are still there. I had not used back ups only for excel and outlook and such. I re-installed the programs from the original installation files.

The puzzling fact is that none of the virus or spy programs I use show anything. Only happens here in the UK and since I am using virgin media it must be them spreading it. The browsing slow, although I have a 20MB service that is also throttled on top of it because virgin media says if you are using more than 5 GB per day we’ll throttling it down to 5 MB for the rest of the day.  I know, the Brits are cheaters and thief’s.  We have six computers running here and all have the same symptoms.  (Yeah six of us in the house)

  2. Woah! I’m really digging the template/theme of this blog. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s very hard to get that “perfect balance” between usability and visual appeal. I must say you have done a excellent job with this. Additionally, the blog loads very fast for me on Internet explorer. Outstanding Blog!
